A medical device (MD) is any instrument, apparatus, equipment, material, or product (except for products of human origin), including accessories and software, used alone or in combination, for medical purposes in humans, and whose main intended action is not achieved by pharmacological, immunological, or metabolic means.

Four categories of medical devices are supported by the Graduate School of Medical Device Engineering in this call for doctoral grants:

  • MD equipment

  • MD software

  • MD implantable

  • MD connected

The Graduate School of Medical Device Engineering offers a doctoral grant for a student enrolled in a master of the Graduate School Medical Device Engineering and awarded in 2025/2026 by a Excellence Master Scholarship from the Graduate School.

Conditions for awarding doctoral stipends:

  • The purpose of the project is applied research for medical devices belonging to one of the four types supported by the Graduate School.

  • The HDR thesis supervisor, and the main supervisor if they are not the HDR, are members of the Graduate School of Medical Device Engineering

 

PhD topic: PhD project BioGesin 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Excellence of the student curriculum

  • Professional project of the student

  • Adequacy of the project for the types of DM supported by the GS

  • Scientific quality of the project

  • Quality of supervision

  • The maturity of the project in relation to a MD outlet: transfer and clinical collaboration,

    regulatory aspects, etc.

  • Potential impact on clinical practice

Application procedure:

  • Proposals must be formalized in a file and sent to medical.device.engineering@univ-lyon1.fr by 15th April 26.

  • 2 Proposals will be reviewed by two external reviewers and evaluated by the Graduate School Council on May 2026, based on these reports. Projects will either be accepted onto the main list or rejected.

  • 3 Projects on the main list will be interviewed (the student and the supervisor) by the Graduate School Council in June 2026. The list of funded projects (with complementary list) will be published following this meeting.emmanuel.desouhant@univ-lyon1.fr

Funding Details:

La thèse de doctorat doit débuter au plus tard le 1er septembre 2026. Le financement correspond au montant d’une bourse de recherche ministérielle française. Le financement SFRI couvre 36 mois, sans possibilité de prolongation, selon le montant fixé par le ministère français de la recherche.
