GRADUATE + LYON St.ETIENNE UNIVERSITIES

Immunology, Vaccinology and Infectious Diseases

Since the creation of Institut Mérieux at the end of the 19th century, Lyon’s interest in infectious diseases, both human and animal, has grown steadily, making the city an international reference center for academic and industrial research, and for the production of diagnostics, vaccines and antimicrobials.

The IVID programme was created in response to the growing threat to society posed by infectious diseases, and the need to train highly qualified people for basic, translational and industrial research into infectious diseases.

IVID includes 3 “Molecular and Cellular Biology” Master’s courses:

  • M2 Infectiology
  • M2 Immunology, Immunopathology, Immunotherapy (3i)
  • The Erasmus Mundus Living International Vaccinology Education pathway, with a specific M1 and M2 (LIVE )

Summer School IVID: 2–3 September 2025

The GI IVID (Immunology, Vaccinology and Infectious Diseases) Summer School 2025 is designed to train students in cutting-edge therapeutic and surveillance strategies targeting infectious diseases and cancers.

Master in Molecular and Cellular Biology (BMC)

Managed by the University of Lyon 1, the BMC Master's program with the M2 Infectiology track offers students, after completing the first year M1 or equivalent (health studies, veterinary studies, etc.), advanced training in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Virology, Microbiology, Host-Pathogen Interactions, Immunology, and Vaccinology. It provides a specialization in either "IF" (Fundamental Infectiology), aimed at undertaking a Research Project in an academic environment ("master thesis") and subsequently pursuing a Ph.D., or "IA" (Applied Infectiology), with the goal of entering the workforce at the postgraduate level in industry and the socio-economic sector in general. The program has a capacity of 40 students.

The curriculum includes (UE taught in French in black; UE taught in English in blue):

  • 3 mandatory UEs common to both specializations: OSBAD, Statistical Analysis and Bioinformatics; Biosafety and Prevention of Biological Risks; Antimicrobial & Vaccine Therapeutic Innovation

  • 2 UEs specific to IF: Scientific Communication; Scientific English or

  • 3 UEs specific to IA: Technology Watch; Legal and Regulatory Aspects in Living Systems; Business Culture

  • 1 optional practical UE: Vaccinology, Virology, or Infectious Bacteriology

  • 3 optional UEs chosen from: Viral Infection Strategy; Bacterial Infection Strategy; Advanced Virology (lectures); Bacteriology and Parasitology (lectures); Immunology and Cancer; Infectious Disease Prevention; Epidemiology; MOOC Vaccinology and Infodemiology

Doctoral research is conducted in a partner laboratory at Graduate +. The training takes place in a doctoral school.
